Biography

Annette von Droste-Hülshoff was born on January 12, 1797, at Burg Hülshoff, emerging into a world that would come to recognize her remarkable talents. Throughout her life, she pursued dual passions as both a composer and writer, leaving an indelible mark on German cultural heritage. Her creative spirit flourished despite the constraints often placed upon women of her era, and she dedicated herself to artistic expression with unwavering commitment.

In her final years, Annette resided at Meersburg Castle, where she continued her work until illness claimed her. She passed away on May 24, 1848, succumbing to pneumonia at the age of fifty-one. Though her life was relatively brief, the depth and quality of her contributions to music and literature ensured her legacy would endure far beyond her years.

Following her death, Annette was laid to rest at Friedhof Meersburg, in the town that had been central to her later life. Her memory is preserved not only in her grave but in the body of work she left behind—compositions and writings that continue to speak to the hearts of those who encounter them.
