Elisa Bonaparte 1777 – 1820
Biography
Elisa Bonaparte was born on January 3, 1777, in Ajaccio, Corsica, into a family whose name would reshape European history. As a member of the Bonaparte family, she moved through the corridors of power during one of history’s most transformative periods, ultimately achieving the rank and status of a French princess. Her life spanned the revolutionary and Napoleonic eras, times of extraordinary change that brought her family from relative obscurity to continental prominence.
Elisa’s life came to an end on August 6, 1820, when she passed away at Villa Vicentina, succumbing to malaria at the age of forty-three. Despite the brevity of her years, she left an imprint on the societies and courts where she lived. Her final resting place reflects the significance she held during her lifetime: she was interred at the San Petronio Basilica in Bologna, Italy, one of the most important religious structures in that region.
Her legacy endures as part of the broader Bonaparte family story, a dynasty that influenced European politics, culture, and society for generations to come.
