Biography

Ba Jin was born on November 25, 1904, in Chengdu, where he first encountered the ideas and questions that would shape his lifetime of creative work. From his early years, he developed a deep commitment to social change and philosophical inquiry, interests that would propel him toward a career dedicated to literature and activism. His intellectual curiosity and moral convictions grew from the rich cultural landscape of early twentieth-century China, a period of significant social transformation.

Throughout his life, Ba Jin became known as both a novelist and an anarchist activist, using his pen as a tool for exploring human freedom, justice, and social reform. His dual commitment to literary expression and political ideals reflected a belief that art and activism were inseparable pursuits. For decades, he contributed meaningfully to Chinese intellectual discourse through his written works and his principled engagement with the pressing issues of his time.

Ba Jin spent his final years in Shanghai, where he continued his literary legacy until his death on October 17, 2005, at the age of one hundred. He passed away from Parkinson’s disease, an illness he endured with the same quiet dignity that characterized much of his life. His century-long existence spanned revolutionary change in China and beyond, making him a witness to and participant in one of history’s most transformative periods.
