Biography

Peter of Castile was born on September 7, 1334, in Burgos, destined to rule one of medieval Europe’s most powerful kingdoms. At just sixteen years old, he ascended to the throne of Castile and León, beginning a reign that would span nearly two decades. During his time as king from 1350 until his death, Peter navigated the complex political landscape of fourteenth-century Spain, working to consolidate power and manage the competing interests of nobility and neighboring kingdoms.

Peter’s reign was marked by the challenges inherent to medieval rule—internal strife, external threats, and the constant need to prove authority. His life came to a tragic end on March 31, 1369, in Montiel, where he died from a stab wound. Though his reign was relatively brief, Peter left a significant mark on Castilian history during a transformative period. He was honored with burial in the Capilla Real of the Cathedral of Seville, one of Spain’s most sacred royal spaces, reflecting his status and the importance placed on his memory by those who followed.
