Biography

Borys Liatoshynsky was born on December 22, 1894, in Zhytomyr, a city in central Ukraine with a rich cultural heritage. From his early years, he would become deeply committed to the musical arts, eventually establishing himself as a significant figure in Ukrainian musical life. His career spanned much of the twentieth century, a period of tremendous transformation in his homeland and across Europe.

Throughout his life, Liatoshynsky distinguished himself through multiple roles in the musical world. As a composer, he created works that contributed to the Ukrainian musical tradition. His work as a conductor allowed him to shape performances and guide orchestras, while his dedication to teaching ensured that his knowledge and artistic vision were passed to younger generations of musicians. In these three capacities—composer, conductor, and educator—he left a lasting impact on Ukrainian cultural life.

Liatoshynsky spent his final years in Kyiv, Ukraine’s vibrant capital, where he remained active in the city’s artistic community. He died on April 15, 1968, and was laid to rest at Baikove Cemetery in the Holosiiv Raion. His burial place reflects the respect accorded to prominent cultural figures of his era, and his legacy continues to resonate within Ukrainian musical circles and beyond.
