Biography

Guy III of Spoleto was born on January 1, 855, in the Italian city of Spoleto, during a transformative period in European history. He would go on to hold one of medieval Europe’s most prestigious titles, serving as Holy Roman Emperor from 891 until his death in 894—a reign that, though brief, placed him among the continent’s most powerful rulers of his era.

Despite the significance of his imperial position, details of Guy’s life remain sparse in historical records. What is known is that his tenure as Holy Roman Emperor spanned only three years, a relatively short period marked by the complex politics and military challenges characteristic of the late ninth century. He died on December 16, 894, in Taro, far from his birthplace.

Guy was laid to rest at Parma Cathedral in Parma, Italy, where his remains were interred with the honor befitting his station. Though his life was cut short at thirty-nine years old, Guy III of Spoleto left an indelible mark as a ruler of the Holy Roman Empire during one of its most formative periods.
