Lorenzo Da Ponte 1749 – 1838
Biography
Lorenzo Da Ponte was born on March 10, 1749, in Ceneda, Italy, where he began a life that would span nearly nine decades and take him across continents. A man of remarkable versatility, he pursued careers as an opera librettist, poet, and Roman Catholic priest—roles that reflected both his artistic talents and spiritual commitments. His work in the operatic world would leave a lasting mark on the art form, blending his literary gifts with an understanding of dramatic composition.
Da Ponte’s life carried him far from his Italian birthplace, eventually leading him to New York City, where he spent his final years. On August 17, 1838, at the age of 89, he passed away in that distant city, having lived through periods of profound historical change. His remains were laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Queens, a final resting place that reflected his adopted American home. Through his decades of creative work and spiritual service, Lorenzo Da Ponte left behind a legacy that bridged Old World artistic traditions with New World opportunities, embodying the life of a true Renaissance figure of the opera world.
