Biography

Franz Werfel was born on September 10, 1890, in Prague, a city rich with cultural tradition that would shape his artistic sensibilities from childhood. His talents blossomed across multiple literary forms—as a novelist, playwright, and poet, he became one of the most versatile writers of his era. His work reflected the intellectual currents of early twentieth-century Europe, engaging audiences across the German-speaking world and beyond.

Throughout his career, Werfel’s creative output spanned diverse genres and themes, demonstrating a restless imagination and commitment to his craft. He navigated a turbulent historical period, witnessing profound changes across Europe that inevitably influenced his writing. His ability to move fluidly between poetry, drama, and long-form fiction showcased a rare literary range that earned him recognition among his contemporaries.

Werfel spent his final years in Beverly Hills, far from the Prague of his birth. He passed away on August 26, 1945, from a myocardial infarction, just as the world was emerging from the devastation of the Second World War. Though his life ended in California, his legacy remained rooted in his adopted homeland; he was laid to rest at Vienna Central Cemetery in Kaiserebersdorf, Austria, where his contributions to European letters continue to be honored and studied.
