Biography

Muhammad Ahmad ibn ʿAbdallah was born on August 12, 1844, in Dongola, Sudan, during a time of significant religious and political transformation across the region. From his early years, he devoted himself to spiritual pursuits and Islamic scholarship, which would shape the trajectory of his remarkable life.

In his adulthood, Muhammad Ahmad became known as a religious leader whose teachings resonated deeply with the Sudanese people. He proclaimed himself the Mahdi, a figure believed in Islamic tradition to be a messianic guide, and this declaration drew followers who saw in him a spiritual authority and leader for their community during a period of considerable change.

His life was cut short when he died on June 22, 1885, in Khartoum at the age of just forty, succumbing to typhus. Despite his brief time on earth, his spiritual legacy endured beyond his death. He was laid to rest at The Mahdi’s tomb in Omdurman, Sudan, where his memory has been preserved as a significant figure in Sudanese religious and cultural history.
