Biography

James Mill was born on April 6, 1773, in Angus, Scotland, beginning a life devoted to intellectual pursuits that would span six decades. He developed into a distinguished Scottish historian, economist, political theorist, and philosopher whose work would influence thought across multiple disciplines. His career reflected the breadth of his intellectual interests and the complexity of the emerging modern world in which he lived.

Mill spent much of his productive life engaging with the great questions of his era—the nature of economic systems, the foundations of political theory, and the methods of historical inquiry. His contributions as a thinker extended across fields that were themselves still taking shape, and he worked during a transformative period in British intellectual life. His various roles as historian, economist, and philosopher allowed him to bring interconnected insights to bear on the pressing issues of his time.

On June 23, 1836, Mill died in Kensington, London, where he had spent his later years. He was laid to rest at St Mary Abbots Church in Kensington, leaving behind a legacy of scholarly work and intellectual engagement. His life represented the earnest pursuit of knowledge and understanding that characterized the best of the Scottish and British intellectual traditions of his era.
