Biography

Mary I of Hungary was born on April 14, 1371, in Buda, the heart of the Hungarian kingdom. She came into the world during a period of significant dynastic importance, as queens played vital roles in securing political alliances and ensuring royal succession. Her life, though brief, would leave an indelible mark on Hungarian royal history.

As Queen of Hungary, Mary I carried the responsibilities of her elevated station during a transformative era in Central European politics. She fulfilled the essential duties expected of a queen consort, working to support the stability and continuity of the Hungarian throne during her years of rule.

Tragedy struck on May 25, 1395, when Mary I died in her native Buda at the age of just twenty-four. Her death resulted from complications of childbirth—a common yet devastating fate for women of her time, regardless of rank or station. She was laid to rest with full royal honors at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary in Oradea, Romania, a site befitting her status and legacy as a queen of Hungary.
