Władysław III of Poland

Biography

Władysław III was born on October 31, 1424, in Kraków during a transformative period for Poland. From his youth, he was elevated to positions of considerable authority, serving as both King of Poland and King of Hungary. His dual kingship placed him at the center of Central European politics during the turbulent fifteenth century, a time marked by regional conflicts and shifting alliances.

Though his life was remarkably brief, Władysław III made a significant mark during his reign. He became deeply involved in military campaigns that reflected the political tensions of his era. His commitment to his kingdoms and their defense would ultimately define his legacy, though circumstances would cut short a reign that held great promise for the Polish and Hungarian thrones.

On November 10, 1444, Władysław III died at Varna while engaged in combat. He was just twenty years old. His death in battle demonstrated the personal courage he brought to his role as monarch, though it tragically ended his opportunity to shape the future of his realms. Following his death, he was interred at Wawel Cathedral in Kraków, one of Poland’s most sacred sites, where he remains honored as a significant figure in Polish royal history.
