Carlo Bonaparte 1746 – 1785
Biography
Carlo Bonaparte was born on March 29, 1746, in Ajaccio, Corsica, during a pivotal time in the island’s history. He would become known to the world primarily as the father of Napoleon Bonaparte, one of history’s most influential military and political figures. Though Carlo’s own life was marked by the transformative events of his era, his greatest legacy lies in the son he raised and the values he instilled during Napoleon’s formative years.
Carlo Bonaparte passed away on February 24, 1785, in Montpellier, France, at the age of thirty-eight, succumbing to stomach cancer. His death occurred when his most famous son was still establishing himself in his military career, depriving Napoleon of his father’s counsel during the tumultuous years that followed. Carlo was laid to rest at the Chapelle Impériale in Ajaccio, a final resting place befitting his historical significance as a member of Corsica’s notable families.
Though details of Carlo’s personal accomplishments remain less documented than those of his celebrated son, his place in history is secured through his role in shaping one of the nineteenth century’s most remarkable figures. His life, spanning nearly four decades, bridged Corsica’s transition into French sovereignty and the dawn of the modern age.
