Louis the Stammerer

Biography

Louis the Stammerer was born on November 5, 846, and ascended to the throne of West Francia in 877, ruling during a pivotal moment in medieval European history. His reign, though brief, came at a time when the Carolingian empire was fracturing into distinct regional kingdoms. Despite the challenges facing his realm, Louis maintained his position as king until his death.

On April 14, 879, Louis died in Compiègne, a significant royal residence in what is now northern France. His passing marked the end of a short but consequential reign. Following royal custom, he was laid to rest in Compiègne, the city where he had spent his final days. Though his life was cut short, Louis the Stammerer remains an important figure in the succession of West Frankish rulers during a transformative period of medieval history.
