Biography

Olympe de Gouges was born on May 7, 1748, in Montauban, France, during a time of profound social and political transformation. She would become a remarkable voice for justice and equality, dedicating her life to theatrical and political expression during one of history’s most turbulent periods.

Throughout her life, de Gouges worked as a playwright and political activist, using her talents to challenge the injustices she witnessed around her. Her words on stage and in her political writings served as powerful instruments for change, advocating for the rights and dignity of those whom society had marginalized. She was willing to risk everything for her convictions, standing firm in her beliefs even as the political climate grew increasingly dangerous.

On November 3, 1793, de Gouges was executed by decapitation in Paris, a victim of the revolutionary terror that claimed so many lives. Her death marked the end of a courageous life lived in service to her ideals. Though the location of her burial was not recorded, her legacy endured far beyond her lifetime, inspiring generations to come in their own struggles for justice and human rights.
