Charles IV of France

Biography

Charles IV of France was born on May 25, 1294, in Creil, entering a world of great privilege and expectation. As a member of the powerful Capetian dynasty, his life would be forever shaped by the responsibilities of royal birth and the demands of the French crown. Though his years would be relatively few, his position placed him at the center of the medieval French kingdom during a transformative period in European history.

In 1322, Charles ascended to the throne of France and Navarre, taking on the weighty duties of monarchy during his early adult years. His reign, though brief, saw him navigate the complex political landscape of medieval Europe, managing territories, relationships with nobility, and the affairs of state that occupied a medieval king’s attention. He ruled from his accession until his death, maintaining the dignity and authority expected of his station.

Charles IV died on February 9, 1328, at the Château de Vincennes, succumbing to tuberculosis at the age of thirty-three. His final resting place was the Basilica of Saint-Denis, the traditional burial site of French monarchs, where he joined the generations of rulers who came before him. Though his reign was cut short by illness, Charles remained a part of the enduring legacy of the French crown.
