Biography

André Malraux was born on November 3, 1901, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, into a world on the brink of profound change. Over the course of his extraordinary life, he would become one of France’s most influential figures, leaving his mark as a novelist, art theorist, and statesman whose contributions would shape twentieth-century French culture and thought.

Throughout his career, Malraux explored the complexities of human experience through both the written word and visual culture. His work as a novelist demonstrated a keen understanding of the human condition, while his theories on art revealed his conviction that artistic expression held the key to understanding civilization itself. These intellectual pursuits complemented his active role in French public life, where he worked to advance his nation’s cultural legacy and political ideals.

Malraux passed away on November 23, 1976, in Créteil, succumbing to cancer at the age of seventy-five. His death marked the end of a remarkable life devoted to literature, philosophy, and service to France. The nation honored his memory by interring him in the Panthéon in the Quartier de la Sorbonne, a final resting place reserved for France’s greatest citizens—a fitting tribute to a man whose influence extended far beyond his lifetime.
