Biography

Sejong the Great was born on April 18, 1397, in Tongin-dong, beginning a life that would profoundly shape the Korean peninsula. As the fourth king of Joseon, he rose to a position of extraordinary influence during a transformative period in Korean history. His reign was marked by remarkable intellectual and cultural achievements that extended far beyond the typical duties of a monarch.

Among his most enduring legacies was the creation of Hangul, the Korean alphabet. This revolutionary writing system democratized literacy and knowledge, making written communication accessible to the common people rather than limiting it to the educated elite. His commitment to advancing Korean culture and learning established him as one of history’s most visionary rulers.

Sejong’s later years were affected by declining health, and he ultimately succumbed to diabetes on February 26, 1450, at Andong Byeolgung. He was laid to rest at Yeongneung in Naegok-dong, South Korea, where his memory continues to be honored. The legacy he left—a more educated, culturally vibrant nation with its own distinctive written language—continues to define Korean identity to this day.
