Biography

Martin was born on June 23, 598, in Pian di San Martino, during a transformative period in the early Christian Church. He would go on to serve as Bishop of Rome from 649 until his death, a tenure marked by his principled stands on matters of doctrine and faith that would define his legacy for centuries to come.

As pope, Martin I became known for his steadfast opposition to Monothelitism, a theological position that challenged orthodox Christian understanding of Christ’s nature. His refusal to compromise on this fundamental matter of doctrine, despite significant political pressure, demonstrated his unwavering commitment to what he believed was true Christian teaching. This courageous stand, however, came at great personal cost.

Martin’s principled opposition led to his exile, and he spent his final years far from Rome in Chersonesus, where he died on September 22, 655. He was buried in that distant place, yet his witness did not fade. Both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches venerate Martin as a saint and martyr, honoring his sacrifice and the example he set of faith that could not be shaken by adversity or exile.
