Biography

Bartolomeo Prignano, known to history as Urban VI, was born on January 1, 1318, in the small Italian town of Itri. He would go on to serve as Pope of the Catholic Church during a pivotal and turbulent period in ecclesiastical history, holding the office from 1378 until his death in 1389. His papacy spanned eleven consequential years that witnessed significant challenges to the Church’s unity and authority.

Urban VI’s tenure as Pope came during a time of considerable upheaval within the Catholic hierarchy. His leadership navigated complex theological and political circumstances that tested the institution’s resilience. Throughout his years in Rome, he remained committed to his sacred duties despite the pressures and conflicts that characterized his pontificate.

On October 23, 1389, Urban VI died in Rome under tragic circumstances—poisoned, a grim reminder of the dangers faced by Church leaders during the medieval period. His body was laid to rest in the Vatican Grotto, beneath the great basilica he had shepherded. Though his papacy was marked by controversy and challenge, Urban VI’s eleven-year tenure left an indelible mark on Catholic Church history, and his final resting place in the heart of Vatican City stands as a testament to his ultimate dedication to the faith he served.
