Oskar Schindler 1908 – 1974
Biography
Oskar Schindler was born on April 28, 1908, in Svitavy. A German industrialist, he came of age during one of history’s most challenging periods. Through his work and determination, Schindler would ultimately use his position and resources to make a profound difference in the lives of those around him during the Holocaust, demonstrating that individual courage and compassion could provide sanctuary even in humanity’s darkest hours.
Though his early life centered on business endeavors, Schindler became known as a rescuer during the Holocaust, using his industrial operations to protect those facing persecution. His actions reflected a deep commitment to preserving human life when doing so required tremendous personal risk and moral clarity. He stands as a testament to the power of conscience in extraordinary circumstances.
Schindler spent his final years in Hildesheim, where he passed away on October 9, 1974, from liver failure. His legacy, however, extends far beyond his lifetime. He was laid to rest at Mount Zion in Jerusalem, Israel—a fitting resting place that honors his role in saving lives and his enduring impact on the course of history. His memory continues to inspire those who believe in the importance of standing against injustice.
