Edward II of England

Biography

Edward II was born on May 2, 1284, at Caernarfon Castle in Wales, arriving into a world of privilege and expectation as the son of King Edward I. From his earliest days, he was destined for the throne, and his path to kingship seemed assured by circumstance and royal blood. His birth marked the beginning of a life that would be examined, debated, and scrutinized by historians for centuries to come.

He ascended to the English throne in 1307, inheriting a kingdom shaped by his father’s ambitions and military campaigns. Edward II’s reign would prove eventful and challenging, spanning two decades until his death. Throughout these years, he navigated the complex demands of medieval monarchy, contending with the pressures and responsibilities that came with his crown.

Edward II died on September 29, 1327, at Berkeley Castle, his life cut short by asphyxia. His final resting place was Gloucester Cathedral, where he was interred with the dignity befitting a monarch. Though his reign remains a subject of historical interest and interpretation, Edward II’s legacy is preserved in the record of his time and in the sacred walls of the cathedral that holds his remains.
