David Ricardo 1772 – 1823
Biography
David Ricardo was born on April 18, 1772, in London, at a time when economic thought was undergoing profound transformation. Over the course of his lifetime, he would become one of the most influential British economists and politicians of his era, shaping how nations understood trade, value, and wealth creation.
Ricardo devoted himself to both scholarly inquiry and public service, establishing himself as a leading voice in economic theory and parliamentary affairs. His ideas on international commerce and economic principles would influence generations of thinkers and policymakers, cementing his legacy as a foundational figure in modern economics.
On September 11, 1823, Ricardo passed away at his home in Gatcombe Park. He was laid to rest at the Church of St Nicholas in Hardenhuish, Chippenham, where his memory remains preserved. Though his life was relatively brief—ending at age fifty-one—the impact of his work extended far beyond his years, continuing to shape economic discourse and policy long after his death.
