Biography

Mary I was born on February 28, 1516, at the Palace of Placentia, entering the world as a princess of England. Her life would be defined by the turbulent religious and political upheavals of the Tudor era, a period marked by shifting alliances, contested claims to the throne, and profound questions about faith and monarchy. From her earliest days, she was shaped by the expectations and conflicts that characterized her family’s reign.

On November 27, 1558, Mary I passed away at St James’s Palace, her life ending at the age of forty-two. Her death came after an illness of influenza, bringing to a close her five-year reign as Queen of England and Ireland, a tenure that had lasted from 1553 until her final day. The challenges she faced during her years as monarch would leave a lasting mark on English history and memory.

Mary I was laid to rest at Westminster Abbey in London, honored with burial among England’s most significant historical figures.
