Biography

Helmut Schmidt was born on December 23, 1918, in Hamburg, Germany, during a transformative period in European history. Throughout his life, he would become a significant political figure whose leadership shaped post-war Germany during critical decades. His long life spanned nearly a century, witnessing dramatic changes across the continent and beyond.

Schmidt served as Chancellor of West Germany, a position of considerable responsibility during the Cold War era.
