Biography

Golda Meir was born on May 3, 1898, in Kyiv, a city rich with the cultural and intellectual traditions of Eastern European Jewish life. From her earliest years, she was shaped by the world around her, influences that would eventually lead her to become one of the most significant political figures of the twentieth century. Her journey from this distant birthplace to the center of Middle Eastern politics represents a remarkable personal odyssey.

Meir served as Prime Minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974, a pivotal period in the young nation’s history. During her tenure, she navigated complex international relations, security challenges, and the enormous responsibilities of leading a developing state. Her leadership style and political decisions left a lasting imprint on Israeli governance and continue to be studied and debated by historians and political analysts worldwide.

On December 8, 1978, Meir passed away in West Jerusalem after a battle with leukemia. She was laid to rest at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, a cemetery that honors many of Israel’s most distinguished citizens.
