Louis XVI of France

Biography

Louis XVI was born on August 23, 1754, at the Palace of Versailles, entering a world of royal tradition and centuries of French royal authority. He would ascend to the throne in 1774, inheriting a kingdom facing profound challenges. His reign witnessed dramatic transformations in the structure of French governance, serving first as King of France and Navarre before his title changed to King of the French in 1791, reflecting the revolutionary changes sweeping through the nation.

His final years unfolded amid the turbulent upheaval of the French Revolution, a period that fundamentally altered the course of European history. On January 21, 1793, at place de la Concorde in Paris, Louis XVI died by guillotine—a fate that marked the violent end of an era. His remains were later interred at Madeleine Cemetery in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, a modest resting place far removed from the grandeur of Versailles where his life had begun. His legacy remains one of history’s most poignant examples of a monarch whose reign encompassed both the apex of absolute monarchy and its ultimate dissolution.
