Biography

Born in Paris on April 20, 1808, Napoleon III would become one of the most consequential figures of nineteenth-century Europe. Rising to prominence during a period of political upheaval in France, he first served as President of the Second French Republic before consolidating power to establish the Second French Empire, becoming the last monarch to rule France. His reign marked a transformative era for the nation, reshaping its institutions and influencing the broader European political landscape.

Napoleon III’s life spanned most of the nineteenth century, witnessing tremendous change in European society and governance. His leadership during the Empire reflected the ambitions and complexities of his era, leaving an indelible mark on French history and culture. Though his reign would eventually end and his empire fade into history, the legacy of his influence remained significant.

He spent his final years in exile, ultimately settling in Chislehurst, where he passed away on January 9, 1873, from sepsis at the age of sixty-four. His remains were interred at his sarcophagus in Farnborough, United Kingdom, far from the nation he once ruled, yet forever connected to the dramatic history of nineteenth-century France.
