Biography
Ali Khamenei was born on April 19, 1939, in Mashhad, Iran. Over the course of nearly four decades, he became one of the most significant figures in contemporary Middle Eastern history, serving as Supreme Leader of Iran from 1989 until his death in 2026. His tenure spanned multiple generations and witnessed profound transformations within Iran and across the broader region.
Khamenei’s long period of leadership left an indelible mark on Iranian political, religious, and social institutions. Throughout his years in office, he navigated complex domestic challenges while maintaining Iran’s position as a major regional power. His decisions and policies influenced millions of lives both within Iran’s borders and throughout the international community.
On February 28, 2026, Khamenei died in Tehran as a result of an airstrike. His passing marked the end of an era of continuous leadership. In accordance with his prominence and spiritual significance, he was interred at the Imam Reza Shrine in the Samen District, one of Shiism’s most sacred sites.
