Biography
Louis XIV was born on September 5, 1638, at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, entering the world as the heir to the French throne. He ascended to kingship in 1643 and would go on to reign as King of France and Navarre for over seven decades, becoming one of history’s most influential monarchs. His long tenure shaped European politics and culture during a transformative period.
Throughout his reign, Louis XIV left an indelible mark on France and the wider world. His vision and leadership guided the kingdom through significant developments that would echo through the centuries. He dedicated much of his life to the responsibilities of sovereignty, working to strengthen and elevate his realm.
In his final years, Louis XIV faced declining health. He passed away on September 1, 1715, at the Palace of Versailles at the age of seventy-six, his death attributed to gangrene. His body was laid to rest with great dignity at the Basilica of Saint-Denis in Saint-Denis, France, a final resting place befitting a monarch of his stature and legacy.
