Biography

Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born on December 17, 1936, in Flores, Argentina, where his early years shaped the compassionate worldview he would carry throughout his life. His spiritual calling led him into the priesthood, where he devoted himself to serving the Catholic faithful and advocating for the poor and marginalized. His ministry reflected a deep commitment to social justice and pastoral care that would become hallmarks of his leadership.

In 2013, Cardinal Bergoglio was elected as Pope Francis, becoming the 266th pontiff of the Catholic Church. During his twelve years as head of the Church, he worked tirelessly to promote mercy, dialogue, and reform within the institution. His papacy was marked by efforts to bridge divides, encourage interfaith understanding, and bring the Church’s attention to pressing global concerns including poverty, immigration, and environmental stewardship.

Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, at the Domus Sanctae Marthae in Vatican City, following a circulatory collapse.
