Biography

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in the coastal town of Porbandar, India. He would become known to the world as Mahatma Gandhi, a title meaning “Great Soul,” and his life would profoundly shape the course of modern history. Through decades of dedicated work, he emerged as the central figure in India’s struggle for independence from British colonial rule.

Gandhi’s approach to activism was rooted in principles of nonviolence and civil disobedience, methods that inspired movements for justice and freedom across the globe. His unwavering commitment to these ideals made him a transformative leader whose influence extended far beyond the borders of India. He worked tirelessly to unite his nation and advance the cause of human dignity.

On January 30, 1948, Gandhi was assassinated by gunshot at Gandhi Smriti in New Delhi. He was 78 years old. His passing marked the loss of one of history’s most influential voices for peace, yet his legacy endured. He was laid to rest at Raj Ghat and associated memorials in Central Delhi, where people continue to honor his memory and the principles for which he lived and died.
