Biography

Yannis Kounellis was born on March 23, 1936, in Piraeus, Greece, where he began his journey toward becoming one of the most influential artists of his generation. Throughout his distinguished career, he worked across multiple artistic mediums, establishing himself as a painter and sculptor whose innovative approach challenged conventional boundaries between disciplines. His creative vision extended beyond his own artistic practice, as he generously shared his knowledge and experience with others through his work as a professor of arts, helping to shape emerging artists and contribute to the broader artistic discourse of his time.

Based in Rome for much of his later life, Kounellis maintained a prolific presence in the European art world, where his work continued to evolve and inspire. He passed away on February 16, 2017, leaving behind a substantial legacy of artistic contributions and the lasting impact of his mentorship. He was laid to rest at the Protestant Cemetery in Rome, a final resting place that reflects his deep connection to the city that became central to his life’s work. His memory endures through both his artistic creations and the generations of artists he influenced throughout his career.
