Biography

Erich Mühsam was born on April 6, 1878, in Berlin, where he would spend much of his life engaged in literary and political pursuits. A writer of conviction and principle, he devoted himself to expressing anarchist ideas through his work, becoming a notable voice for radical thought in German intellectual circles. His commitment to his beliefs never wavered, even as the political climate of his era grew increasingly hostile to such views.

In the darkest chapter of modern history, Mühsam’s life was cut short when he died on July 10, 1934, in Oranienburg concentration camp at the age of fifty-six. He was among countless victims of political persecution during this terrible period. His remains were laid to rest at Waldfriedhof Dahlem in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district of Berlin, where he is remembered by those who honor his memory and his principled stand for his beliefs, even unto death.
