Biography

Jacques Roux was born on August 21, 1752, in Pranzac, during a time of profound social change in France. He devoted his life to the priesthood, embracing both spiritual calling and the revolutionary ideals that swept through his nation during the latter decades of the eighteenth century. As both a man of faith and a committed revolutionary, Roux embodied the complex tensions of his era, when many clergy sought to reconcile traditional religious values with the transformative political movements reshaping French society.

His life came to a tragic end on February 10, 1794, at Bicêtre during the Reign of Terror. Roux died from exsanguination, a reflection of the violence and bloodshed that characterized this turbulent period in French history. He was laid to rest at Cimetière de Gentilly in Paris’s 13th arrondissement, where his remains honor the memory of one who navigated the perilous crossroads between faith and revolution.

Though his life was cut short at just forty-one years of age, Jacques Roux left an indelible mark as a figure who embodied the spiritual and political ferment of Revolutionary France. His legacy reminds us of those who sought meaningful change during history’s most transformative—and most dangerous—moments.
