Philip I of Burgundy 1346 – 1361
Biography
Philip I of Burgundy was born on August 13, 1346, in Rouvres-en-Plaine, a place that would remain deeply connected to his life. Though his years were few, he inherited significant responsibility when he became Duke of Burgundy in 1350 at a remarkably young age. As ruler of this important territory during the tumultuous fourteenth century, he represented continuity and succession during a period of considerable upheaval in France and the broader European landscape.
His tenure as Duke was cut tragically short when plague claimed his life on November 29, 1361, at his birthplace in Rouvres-en-Plaine. He was only fifteen years old. The plague, which devastated much of medieval Europe during this era, took him before he could fully mature into his role or establish a lasting legacy of governance. His remains were laid to rest with dignity at Cîteaux Abbey in Saint-Nicolas-lès-Cîteaux, France, a burial befitting his ducal rank and the solemnity of his station.
