Biography

Peire Vidal was born on January 1, 1175, in Toulouse, France, during a flourishing era of medieval culture and artistic expression. He emerged as a troubadour, one of the skilled poets and musicians who were central to the cultural life of southern France during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The troubadour tradition represented a sophisticated artistic movement, and those who practiced it were celebrated for their lyrical compositions and performances.

Vidal’s life was brief, spanning only thirty years before his death on January 1, 1205, in his native city of Toulouse. Like many artists of his time, details of his personal life remain sparse in historical records, yet his contributions to the troubadour tradition place him within an important literary and musical heritage. His work would have participated in the rich cultural exchange that characterized medieval Occitania, a region known for its advancement in poetry, music, and courtly arts.

Though much about Vidal’s specific compositions and performances has been lost to time, his existence as a troubadour connects him to a remarkable period when vernacular poetry flourished and musicians shaped the cultural landscape of medieval Europe.
