Irina Skobtseva 1927 – 2020

Biography

Irina Skobtseva was born on August 22, 1927, in Tula, a historic city in western Russia. She would go on to become a notable figure in Soviet and Russian cinema, dedicating much of her life to the performing arts during a transformative era for film and theater in the Soviet Union.

Throughout her career, Skobtseva worked as an actress, contributing to the cultural landscape of her country during decades of significant change. She witnessed and participated in the evolution of Soviet cinema from its early experimental periods through the later years of the twentieth century.

Skobtseva spent her final years in Moscow, where she passed away on October 20, 2020, at the age of ninety-three. Her contributions to Russian film and culture were recognized through her interment at Novodevichy Cemetery in the Khamovniki District, one of Russia’s most prestigious burial grounds, where many notable figures in arts and letters have been laid to rest.
