Biography

Viktor Nekrasov was born on June 17, 1911, in Kyiv, where he would develop into one of the Soviet era’s most important literary voices. As a writer of exceptional talent and unflinching integrity, he became known for works that captured the complexities of human experience with remarkable honesty. His commitment to truthful expression, however, placed him at odds with the restrictive literary conventions of his time.

Throughout his life, Nekrasov demonstrated remarkable courage in speaking his conscience. His status as a dissident reflected his unwavering belief that literature should illuminate truth rather than serve propaganda. This principled stance ultimately led him to leave his homeland, becoming an emigrant who continued his literary work while living abroad.

Nekrasov spent his final years in Paris, where he remained active until his death on September 3, 1987, from lung cancer. Though he passed away far from his birthplace, his legacy as a writer and truth-teller endured. He was laid to rest at Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois Russian Cemetery, joining other Russian émigrés in this place of remembrance. His life stands as a testament to the power of artistic integrity and the personal cost of standing by one’s convictions.
